Welcome new and returning students, introduce the Environmental Justice minor, club, and TREEage chapter, and connect with climate-passionate students. This semester our welcome back event will be during Climate Week, so discussion will be geared toward that. We'll be upcycling and creating tote bags to initiate talks on sustainability. TREEage is youth-led climate organization. For the past five years, alongside students, teachers, professors, and community members, we've built the campaign for Green Healthy Schools, and Mayor Mamdani adopted it as his own. Here’s what we’re fighting for: 500 schools renovated with clean air, heating and cooling, and solar 500 asphalt schoolyards turned green and opened to the neighborhood after hours 50 schools transformed into resilience hubs with backup power and cooling for the whole block 15,000 union jobs for the people who build, maintain, and run our schools From wildfire smoke turning the sky orange to storms flooding the buses and trains we take and the school buildings we sit in, climate disasters continue to worsen. In neighborhoods like the South Bronx, which has been systemically neglected and filled with peaker plants, truck routes, and waste transfer stations, students there are hospitalized for asthma at five times the national rate and 21 times the rate of wealthier NYC neighborhoods.Winning Green Healthy Schools means students from every high school and college across the five boroughs telling their stories and fighting for their communities.
